RAGAČ, Radoslav: News about the Slovak National Uprising and the situation in Slovakia on the pages of the periodical Naše noviny in September 1944

The periodical Naše noviny was founded in June 1940 by the Czechoslovak Army in Exile's decision as a part of efforts to increase cultural and educational activities in the military. The first issue of the newspaper was published on 14 June 1940. In 1944, the periodical retained its original format of several pages and was published as a daily newspaper by the Czechoslovak Independent Armoured Brigade Group. Both Czech and Slovak editors worked in the editorial office, and therefore articles were published in both languages. The main sources of information about the situation in Slovakia included statements and actions of the Czechoslovak government and its members, monitoring of the Slobodný vysielač radio broadcast from Banská Bystrica, the official radio broadcast from Bratislava, reports from the rebel military command, and newspapers. The editorial team viewed the uprising very positively as a "great act" of domestic resistance — a form of satisfaction and a clear declaration by Slovaks of their support for Czechoslovakia and democratic ideals. Occasionally, we also encounter reactions from the Protectorate government to the uprising. Despite factual errors and exaggeration of the rebel successes, this provides a little-known and content-rich perspective on the Slovak National Uprising through the eyes of the soldiers in our exile army.
