František Strapek: Khmer Rouge and Genocide in Cambodia

This work deals with the period of Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia in years 1975 to 1979. The first part focuses on the situation prior to the rightist coup of General Lon Nol in 1970, mentioning not only the beginnings of strengthening the power of Prince Sihanouk, but also French regional influence and the spread of Communist ideology. In another part, the war in Vietnam is spoken about and it impact on Cambodia which was bombed by the Americans with the aim to eliminate North-Vietnamese units located in its territory. Besides this, the short period of General Lon Nol's government is mentioned whose power gradually slipped out as the American support decreased. Next part is dedicated to the government of Khmer Rouge who succeeded to conquer Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, to overthrow the government of the place and start to "build the road" of Communism characterised by the bloodshed and many victims. Last part deals with Czechoslovak-Cambodian relations in the period from 1956 to 1979.
